WAMPUM - Path Belt

This belt is an important belt made prior to the American Revolution. The American colonists were about to war against Britain for their independence. The colonists went to the Haudenosaunee to see for who they would fight for in the upcoming war. The colonists asked the Haudenosaunee for their support and fight against the British. The Haudenosaunee declined.

The Haudenosaunee leaders told them that we have worked with both your fathers (British) and the sons (the colonists) for a long time. And that the Haudenosaunee has no quarrel with the father or the son. Therefore, the Haudenosaunee will not fight with the colonists or against them. That we will continue to travel our separate paths in friendship, peace, and forever.

Therefore the belt that was made looks very similar to the Two Row Wampum belt made made over 100 years earlier. But the Path belt is much shorter than its predecessor. The path belt also only has only one white row separating the two paths. One Path is the colonists and the other the Haudenosaunee.
