Artists

There are many talented artists who call the Onondaga Nation home.  Here are a few artists that you can contact about acquiring native art.

 

Michelle Cronin is an Onondaga author who writes children’s and adult literature. She is a member of the Turtle clan. She is represented by Regina Brooks of the Serendipity Literary Agency. Michelle recently embarked on her writing career, and her first manuscript is currently on submission.

Karenlyne Hill is a member of the Snipe Clan of the Onondaga Nation. Karenlyne is a beadworker who specializes in Raised Iroquois beadwork. Karenlyne’s beadwork has been featured in museums across the United States.  Along with many airshows, she has won many ribbons and awards including winning at the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Art Market. Karenlyne is privileged to compete and show her work among other talented artists.

Peter B Jones is a member of the Beaver Clan of the Onondaga Nation. Peter has studied at the Institute of American Indian Art and since has worked to bring Haudenosaunee pottery back to life.  Through the years Peter has been commissioned to display his works at sites such as the Ganondagan State Historic Site, Mashantucket Pequot Museum, Summit County Historical Society in Akron, OH, and NYS Parks Historic Preservation at Watkins Glen.

Barry  Powless of the Eel clan and grew up as a “Hemlocker” and “stone thrower” at Onondaga. He studied Fine Art at Syracuse University and currently lives and works in Western NY. Barry Powless is also a 5-time Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee. He loves painting portraits of native people and his work has won two “Best of Show” awards at the NY State Indian Village Art Show and 3rd place in Ganondagan’s Art Show last year. Barry also commissions portraits in both acrylic and oil.

Sophia Powless is Wolf Clan and is currently a graduate student at Columbia University. She accepts orders for shoe painting/designs, stickers, graphic design, as well as beadwork. Sophia is known for her colorful, pastel creations that pull inspiration from traditional Haudenosaunee ribbon dresses.

Johnny Ray & the Stone Throwers is a blues/rock group from the Onondaga Nation. The group was formed in 2010 by Dion Thomas and John Shenandoah, both members of the Onondaga Nation. The group released a self-titled full length album in 2013, which was nominated for best blues album in the 2015 Syracuse Area Music Awards.

Tracy Thomas is Wolf Clan and he grew up on the Onondaga Nation which is the Capital of the Haudenosaunee.  Having been born with 2 partial fingers on his left hand and none on his right hand, this has not hindered Tracy in any way from pursuing art.  Tracy has won many awards since grade school and has designed 3 Team Haudenosaunee Logos for the North American Indigenous Games.
