“Hey Victor, what about ONS?”

November 4, 2008 by Onondaga Nation

The school was a buzz with the anticipation of a surprise visitor, actor Adam Beach.  Adam is a film and screen actor who has starred in such films as Flags of Our Fathers, Windtalkers, Smoke Signals, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Joe Dirt, and NBC’s Law & Order and made a surprise visit to our school.  He didn’t disappoint the assembly as he introduced himself, “Hi, I am Adam Beach.  I came to here because Onondaga has the best lacrosse players!”  To which the school erupted in a great cheer.  Adam came to the school to talk about his journey as an actor, the importance of getting an education, and being respectful and being proud of his native heritage.

Adam is Saulteaux and grew up in Ashern, Manitoba Canada. He expressed to the students and staff of the Onondaga Nation School how important it is to continue in school. In his travels he has witnessed how difficult it can be for native people, and an education clears the way to many opportunities. He wanted everyone to be proactive in their learning and to make a change, not only for yourself, but for the “younger Onondagas” growing up too.  He warned of being the young natives who constantly say, “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do here”.  He challenged to students to join together and do something creative to make a difference.

As our time with actor Adam Beach came to a close, the students were able to ask some questions about living in Hollywood, his favorite scenes, and what it was like to get started? Lastly before all shook his hand to welcome him to our community, sixth grader Glenn asked the important question, “Can you sing John Wayne’s Teeth?”  Which he did with enthusiasm!

John Wayne’s teeth, hey ya
John Wayne’s teeth, hey ya
Are they false?
Are they real?
Are the plastic?
Are they steel?
