LaFayette Volleyball wins Sectionals

March 28, 2010 by Onondaga Nation

Dewitt, NY- On Saturday February 19, 2011, the LaFayette girls volleyball team defeated undefeated Dodgeville 25-12, 14-25, 25-19, 25-19.  The Lancers finished their season as Section III C-2 champions.

The Lady Lancers led by its 3 Senior captains Aliza Potter (Snipe Clan), Maura Abrams (Bear Clan), Elaina Powless (Wolf Clan), and Junior Haley Rockwell (Turtle Clan), and Bean Minard (Eel Clan) completed a great season with 19 wins and only 2 regular season losses.

LaFayette entered Sectional play as the number 2 seed behind the undefeated and number one seed Dodgeville. The Lady Lancers quickly disposed of visiting Port Byron in the first Sectional game in three games.  LaFayette then traveled to Sandy Creek to face Beaver River High School.  Last year, Beaver River eliminated the Lady Lancers in 4 games ending their 2010 season.  But this season the Lady Lancers avenged last year’s loss. With the lady Lancers strong overall play, they won in 3 games to move on and defeat Beaver River setting up a championship game with the Dodgeville Blue Devils.

The Saturday morning of the championship game brought another snowstorm.  But the weather did not keep the fans away as the pro-LaFayette crowd filled the Jamesville-Dewitt gymnasium to cheer on the Lady Lancers.  The Lady Lancers started out quickly behind the service play of Aliza Potter, Elaina Powless’ blocking, and Maura Abrams’ kills winning the first game handily.  The second game saw Dodgeville’s servers come to life and help them win Game 2 to tie the match at a game apiece.  But the third and fourth game saw the Lady Lancers defensive play handle the serves of the number one seed.  In their previous games for Dodgeville, most opponents were unable to return their serves. But the Lady Lancers not only was able to return the serve, but often set up kills of their own on their way to the Sectional crown; ending their season as champions and handing Dodgeville their only defeat of the season.

The win was especially sweet for LaFayette as this is their last time they will be competing for Sectional titles in the winter season.  Girls volleyball will now be a fall sport in 2011 where they will be competing against larger schools and the opportunity of a State crown.

Congratulations on a great job Lady Lancers; Head Coach Abby Storrier and Coach Lorrie Tanner, Katie Clarke, Kayla McElhannon, Bean Minerd, Kelsey Terrell, Cassidy Ubieta, Sloane Ferenchak, Jillian McKee, Harley Rockwell, Maura Abrams, Aliza Potter, and Elaina Powless.
